  • As expected, a great book

    Having always been a big fan of this man’s musical talent, I was keen to read this book as soon as it came out, especially having read the previous biography which was like a prequel to this. Indeed, I bought the audiobook - read by the man himself (which, I hasten to add, added so much more to the experience). For the most part I’ve really enjoyed A Better Me. It’s a great, inspiring, addictive read, spanning from the break up of TT, covering the barrage of abuse showered on him by everyone (especially RW) during the “fat”/wilderness years, the regrouping of TT and the subsequent massive success following Patience and Beautiful World, the X Factor, the Diamond Jubilee etc. It’s all covered. The period describing the family’s coping with the death of stillborn Poppy is incredibly sensitive, emotional and moving. A fantastic all round read. If I had one single criticism it would be the incessant reference to food. I know it’s played a massive part in Gary’s life - for better and for worse - but after a while those repetitive details caused me switch off. That said, overall it’s a great read, interesting, sensitive, humorous, - it covers all emotions - and I would highly recommend it.
